COMMUNITY EVENTS JIVE PARTICIPATED FROM 2006 TO 2009

 

1.   Stop AIDS: Be Aware, Show You Care

3 December 2006

 

Participation: 20 JIVE IG Volunteers

Organised by:  Health Promotion Board

Beneficiary: General public

 

This event was organised by The Health Promotion Board (HPB) to commemorate World AIDS Day, on 3 December 2006, Sunday, at two shopping malls for a minimum of 3 hours. 20 student volunteers for this event by getting shoppers to participate in a variety of activities and to provide logistical help to the HPB organisers.

 

Activities the students were involved include:

  • To give out red ribbon cards for shoppers to write messages on what they feel

      about AIDS.

  • Give out pamphlets on HIV/AIDS
  • Man lucky draw booth.
  • Collection of lucky draw cut-outs
  • Man Wishing Stars booth
  • Give out and collect survey forms
  • Crowd control
  • Logistical and organizational support to event organizer

 

 

2.    The Great Singapore Duck Race 2007

9 September 2007

 

Participation: 100 JIVE IG Volunteers

Organised by: HYDL

Beneficiary: Concern & Care Society, Handicaps Welfare Association, Metta Welfare Association, Tampines Family Service Centre, Tan Tock Seng Hospital Community Charity Fund, TOUCH Community Services

 

JIVE IG was involved to take part in the Great Singapore Duck Race 2007 that was held on 9 September 2007, Sunday.  100 RP students were involved in this fund-raising event to help raise fund for the beneficiaries. 

 

 

3.    Admiralty Park Opening Colouring Art Competition Segment

21 October 2007

 

Participation: 30 JIVE IG Volunteers 

Organised by: NParks and NWCDC

Beneficiary: Young Children

 

This event was co-hosted with the Admiralty Park Opening on 21 Oct with NParks and NWCDC. JIVE IG students were in charge of organising and implementing one of the key segments of this event, which was a colouring art competition for young participants aged 4-6 years old.

 

Other areas of involvement for the event included:

  • Pre-event preparation
  • Brainstorming/Developing proposal on activity for young participants
  • Defining the actual day program and logistics of colouring competition
  • Designing and selecting of collaterals for publicity purposes
  • Printing and distribution of the above-mentioned collaterals
  • Artwork for the colouring competition template
  • Selection of manpower to help out at the actual event

 

 

4.    World Aids Day Walkathon

15 November 2007

 

Participation: 50 JIVE IG Volunteers

Organised by: Action for Aids

Beneficiary: People living with aids

 

It was held in conjunction with World Aids Day 2007 Action for Aids Singapore organized the walkathon event on the 2nd of December in Orchard Road. JIVE students were involved to help co-organise the event with Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr Balaji as the guest of honour.

 

The students helped to plan, organise and run the World Aids Day Walkathon. Through this event, the students had the experience in managing all aspects of running an outdoor charity event, especially  a large scale public event involving a non profit organisation and the community.

 

 

 5.   Project B3 by CDAC

08 December 2007

 

Participation: 20 JIVE IG Volunteers

Organised by: Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC)

Beneficiary: Youth – CDAC

 

Project B3 is a carnival to benefit its charities under their care. Students were heavily involved in the on-site operations on the event day. They assisted in the event set up as well as the running of the entire main and fringe activities in the carnival.

 

 

6.   Family FunFest 2007

8 – 19 June 2007

 

Participation: 60 JIVE IG Volunteers

Organised by: National Arts Council (NAC)

Beneficiary: Kids and Families

 

Six first-year JIVE IG students worked closely with National Arts Council (NAC) staff to over the course of 3 days to co-organise the Family Fun Fest 2007, held at Toa Payoh HDB Hub during 8th, 9th and 10th June 2007. In addition, over 60 other JIVE students also volunteered as helpers during the actual event over the course of these three days.

 

The event was part of an outreach program of the Singapore Arts Festival 30th Anniversary Celebration. Together out students and NAC collaborated to brainstorm, plan and facilitate art and craft activities for children aged five to twelve years of age. The activities were aimed at inspiring creativity amongst young minds.

 

 

7.   JIVE Fiesta 2007 – Raising Funds for the Unfortunate

2 – 7 August 2007

 

Participation: 150 JIVE IG Volunteers

Organised by: RP JIVE

Beneficiary: Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Disabled People’s Association, Singapore Cancer Society, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Sunlove.

 

JIVE Fiesta is an initiative started for the current cohort of second year Diploma in Integrated Events Management (DIEM) students and JIVE IG. For the fiesta which took place on 2nd-3rd and 6th-7th August, the 123 students were divided into their respective classes and tasked to organize a lunch-time fundraising event within the campus, for a charity of their choice.

 

The five charities adopted were:

  • Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
  • Disabled People’s Association
  • Singapore Cancer Society
  • Make-A-Wish Foundation
  • Sunlove

Through the four-day JIVE Fiesta event, the students managed to rise close to $5000 for the five charities they have adopted and they are all very proud of their achievements.

 

8.   Yellow Ribbon Sports Carnival 08

29 June 2008

 

Participation: 70 JIVE IG Volunteers

Organised by: Corporation of Rehabilitative Enterprises (SCORE) & Republic Polytechnic.

Beneficiary: Ex-offenders and their families

 

The Yellow Ribbon Sports Carnival is an annual sport carnival, organized for residents of halfway houses and ex-offenders to promote healthy lifestyle among ex-offenders from the Halfway Houses. This year’s event was organized by Singapore Corporation of Rehabilitative Enterprises (SCORE) and co-organized by Republic Polytechnic. This jointly organized event was held at Toa Payoh Sports Hall, with Mr. Masagos Zulkifli Senior Parliamentary Secretary, MOE and MHA as the Guest-of-Honour.

JIVE IG undertook the task of organizing this event held on 29 June 2008.  This was the second year that JIVE has taken part as an event organizer.

                              

9.   Canberra CC National Day Dinner 2008

8 August 2008

 

Participation: 50 JIVE IG Volunteers

Organised by: Canberra Constituency  and JIVE IG

Beneficiary: Sembawang GRC – Resident, Elderly Home & Foreign Workers

 

On 8 August 2008, Canberra Constituency held their National Day dinner at Canberra CC. The event was graced by Minister of Health Dr Khaw Boon Wan. It was a special event for 50 JIVE IG students tasked to assist the organizers in a large-scale community event for over 2,800 guests.

The event was a great success and our student helpers received numerous praises from the event organizers.

Obviously this was another success of RP as quoted here by Alvin Kwok from the Organising Committee”: “Republic Polytechnic provided the hardware to make the event a fabulous one. I hope the students have picked-up some valuable skills and experiences that can help them in their studies in one way or another. We are looking forward in having more collaboration with you soon.”

 

10.       HarmonyWork Conference 2008

Participation: 150 JIVE IG Volunteers

Organised by: OnePeople.sg and RP JIVE IG

Beneficiary: Youth from Secondary School

 

The HarmonyWorks! Conference provides a platform for students to gather insights, views and opinions on inter-racial and inter-religious issues in Singapore from academics, proponents of inter-faith work and grassroots leaders.

 

This year, the HarmonyWorks! Conference will act as a platform for the Finale of the month long Orange Ribbon Racial Harmony Celebrations.

 

It is jointly organised by OnePeople.sg and Republic Polytechnic. The theme for this conference is “Beyond Tolerance; Embracing Diversity”.

 

The Conference will have the following activities:

              Talk and Forums

              Performance

              Workshops

              Presentations

 

The Conference will be graced by Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources & include Mayor from CDCs and MPs.

 

There are multiple avenues including the runnung of this entire event for students to learn and enhance their knowledge. Total delegates and participants was about 500.

 

 

11.       6th Singapore AIDS Conference

8 November 2008

 

Participation: 20 JIVE IG Volunteers

Organised by: Action for AIDS and the Health Promotion

Beneficiary: Action for AIDS and the Health Promotion

 

Action for AIDS together with the Health Promotion is organising the 6th Singapore AIDS Conference. It is a large scale conference with speakers coming from Health organisations, media, NGOs and political leaders. Delegates locally and internationally will be able to learn and share their experience with dealing with the AIDS epidemic through this conference.

 

 

12.       Singapore Biennale Race 2008

08 November 2008

 

Participation: 50 JIVE IG Volunteers

Organised by: Singapore Biennale & National Arts Council

Beneficiary: Youths from upper secondary to tertiary level

 

JIVE IG, in collaboration with the Singapore Biennale & National Arts Council will be organising the Singapore Biennale Race in Nov.

 

The Biennale Race 2008 is a fringe event of Singapore Biennale 2008 targeted at youths.

 

In teams of four, participants will race around the Singapore Biennale 2008 venues. Biennale Race 2008 is open to youths ranging from upper secondary to tertiary level, aged between15-18.

 

Biennale Race 2008 will test on the teams’ teamwork, creativity and determination to triumph the race where they will be awarded with great prizes such as Samsung mobile phones, Mp3 players, exclusive invitations to the Singapore Biennale Closing ceremony and more!

 

Teams will need to complete tasks and challenges that are related in some manner to the exhibitions or artworks where the checkpoints are located. Teams will have to travel via public transport or by foot to reach each checkpoint during the race. Completing each task will earn them a clue to the next checkpoint.

 

 

13.       Narpani-Vasantham Family Day Carnival

Organised by: Narpani Pearavai and Vasantham Central

Beneficiary: Vasantham’s viewers & Indian community

 

Narpani Pearavai and Vasantham Central are jointly organising the Narpani-Vasantham Family Day Carnival on Sunday 16 November 2008 at Mandai Zoo. 

 

The aims of the event are to provide an opportunity for the participants to spend quality time with their families, to reinforce the family as the basic building block our society, to provide a platform for members of the various ethnic groups to come together and interact so as to promote racial harmony and social cohesion and to provide an opportunity to celebrate the launch of Vasantham as an independent Indian channel with the community

 

There are multiple avenues including the running of this entire event for our students to learn and enhance their knowledge.

 

                           

14.       JIVE Fiesta 2008 – Raising Funds for the Unfortunate

5 – 12 December 2008

 

Participation: 175 JIVE IG Volunteers

Organised by: RP JIVE IG

Beneficiary: Children’s Cancer Foundation, Club Rainbow, HCA Hospice Care, Kampung Senang, Mainly I Love Kids (M.I.L.K.), Sree Narayana Mission, Yellow Ribbon.

 

JIVE Fiesta is back again! After witnessing last year’s success, year 2 Diploma in Integrated Events Management (DIEM) students and JIVE IG had the chance to organize an event to raise awareness and funds for seven non-profit organizations. By their own efforts and putting what they had learnt in the classrooms, they used two months to plan and execute their events that were held in Republic Polytechnic from 5 to 12 December 2008.

Seven charitable organisations represented by the classes were Children’s Cancer Foundation, Club Rainbow, HCA Hospice Care, Kampung Senang, Mainly I Love Kids (M.I.L.K.), Sree Narayana Mission, and Yellow Ribbon. Most classes chose to hold carnivals in North, South, East and West Agora to attract the crowd. Besides games and food, various Interest Groups were also invited to perform at the event.  

 

 

 

15.       Special Olympics 2009

5-8 June 2009

 

Participation: 49 JIVE IG Volunteers

Organised by: Singapore Special Olympics & MINDS (Movement For the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore)

Beneficiary: International and local delegates suffer some physical disabilities.

 

Singapore held the Special Olympics Singapore 2009 for special athletes around the region.

 

Students were given an opportunity to work in this Special Olympic as helpers to these delegates suffer some physical disabilities.

 

This event benefited the DIEM and JIVE IG students as they learnt about how an international and special sports event was organised in Singapore. 

 

In addition, this event helped them to understanding the social issues such as existence of disability community in Singapore context.

 

 

16.       IGNITE Music Festival Volunteers

24-25 July 2009

 

Participation: 20 JIVE IG Volunteers

Organised by: RP TRCC and RP JIVE IG

Beneficiary: Community Chest’s Youth Appeal Day

 

 

IGNITE! Music Festival 2009 is an annual 2-day free outdoor concert event with fringe carnival booths on the perimeters.

 

JIVE IG organised a booth to sell snack and the fund raised was donated to Youth Day Appeal 2009 under Community Chest.

 

 

 

PIPELINE OF COMMUNITY EVENTS FOR 2009

Ramadhan On-Wheels 2009

12 September 2009

 

Participation: 200  JIVE IG Volunteers

Organised by: 4PM and North East Community Development Council

Beneficiary: Less privilege, elderly and low-income families.

 

‘Ramadhan On-Wheels’(ROW) is 4PM’s annual social and welfare service project

where volunteers assist to send provisions, food hampers and vouchers to less

privileged recipients, low-income families as well as the elderly.

 

Over the years, 4PM also manages this project in partnership the North East

Community Development Council (NECDC), Eunos Community Club and various

Governmental/non-governmental agencies.

 

 

   Run For Hope 2009

22 November 2009

 

Participation: 200 JIVE IG Volunteers

Organised by: Four Seasons Hotel Singapore, Then Regent Singapore and the National Cancer Centre Singapore

Beneficiary: National Cancer Centre

 

Run For Hope is an annual charity event to raise fund for the NCC Research Fund which is an array of basic, translational and clinical research programme.

 

Students will be given an opportunity to work as helpers in the annual running and charity event.

 

 

JIVE Fiesta 2009

Organised by: RP JIVE IG

Beneficiary: Various Charity Organisations under ComChest.

JIVE Fiesta will be back again. After witnessing 2 year’s success, year 2 Diploma in Integrated Events Management (DIEM) students and JIVE IG will have the chance to organize an event to raise awareness and funds for seven non-profit organizations.

This time, JIVE IG is collaborating with Community Chest to focus on raising funds for its various charity organisations. We are in discussion with Mr. Lee Ann Kee, senior Assistant Director for Partnership Marketing Department on the details.
